Connecting the Macintosh to the EcoPRO Printer

There are two types of printer connections: direct and network.

In the direct method, the computer is connected just to the printer; there is no network involved.
In the network type, the printer is connected to the network backbone, not directly to the computer.

Both methods use network cabling and in some cases transceivers. The most popular cabling types are unshielded twisted pair cable (10Base-T) and thin coaxial cable (10Base-2).

The twisted cable must be at least Category 5 rated (CAT5), color is not important.  The coaxial cable must be RG58 A/U.

Direct Connection

The Macintosh computer will have either an AAUI connector on the rear panel or a network card with an RJ45 jack (10Base-T) or a BNC connector (10Base-2) in the expansion bus.

The AAUI connector requires a transceiver device to connect either to the twisted pair cable or the coaxial cable. The EcoPRO has an RJ45 jack or an AUI connector (not the same as the Macintosh AAUI) connector. The AUI connector also requires a transceiver for connecting a coaxial cable.

When using twisted pair, connect in turn, each of the following:
the cable to the 10Base-T AAUI transceiver
the other end of the cable to an L-COM adapter
the L-COM adapter to the RJ45 jack on the EcoPRO.

Be sure that the plug makes a snapping sound when inserting it into the jack.

When using coaxial cable, connect in turn, each of the following:
a T-connector to the a non-terminated AAUI transceiver
a 50 ohm terminator to one side of the T-connector
the cable to the other side of the T-connector
If a self-terminating AAUI transceiver is used, the coaxial cable can be connected without a T-connector.
the other end of the cable to one side of another T-connector
the other side of that T-connector requires a 50 ohm terminator
the T-connector to an AUI transceiver
the AUI transceiver is then connected to the AUI connector on the EcoPRO.  The SQE "heartbeat" should be set to OFF,if it’s available.

The Macintosh network card requires no transceiver devices. When using twisted pair, connect in turn, each of the following:
the twisted pair cable to the RJ45 jack on the card.
the other end of the cable to an L-COM adapter
the L-COM connector to the EcoPRO.

When using coaxial cable connect in turn, each of the following:
a T-connector to the network card
a 50 ohm terminator to one side of the T-connector
the cable to the other side of the T-connector.
the other end of the cable to to one side of another T-connector.
a 50 ohm terminator to the other side of the T-connector
the T-connector to an AUI transceiver
the transceiver to the AUI connector on theEcoPRO. The SQE "heartbeat"should be set to OFF.

Network Connection

The network connection still requires a transceiver if the computer has an AAUI connector.

Using a Hub

Connect in turn, each of the following:
a UTP cable to the AAUI transceiver or the network card.
the other end of the cable to the hub.
another UTP cable directly from the EcoPRO RJ45 jack to the hub. Do not use an L-COM adapter.
any other computers, printers, scanners, etc. to the remaining ports on the hub.

Using Thinnet

Connect in turn, each of the following:
a T-connector to the AAUI or the BNC connector of the network card.
a coaxial cable to one or both sides of the T-connector.
a T-connector to the AUI transceiver on the EcoPRO printer.
cable(s) to the T-connector(s) on other devices on the network.
a 50 ohm terminator both end-devices, which each have one connector open.

Software

Networking software and a PostScript Printer Definition (ppd) file are needed to complete the printer setup.

Networking Software

Double-click in turn, each of the following:
the Hard drive icon.
System Folder icon.
Control Panels Folders.
Either the AppleTalk file or the Network file, depending on the OS version.

If the AppleTalk file was opened, verify or select Ethernet in the "Connect via:" box.  If the Network file was selected, verify or select the appropriate EtherTalk icon (Built-in or Slot).

PPD Software

Select Chooser on the Apple menu. Select the appropriate zone, if necessary. Double-click the LaserWriter 8.3.4 icon.

Click in turn, each of the following:
the EcoPRO printer
the Setup button
the Select PPD button
the ECOPRO.PPD
the Select button
the OK button.

The ECoPRO printer is now ready for printing.
