Cable Requirements, Pin-outs.

Cable Requirements, Pin-outs.
A. For IBM PC's or Compatibles or a Sun workstation with an RS232 port:
1. The plotter uses a straight-through, 25-pin female to 25-pin male
serial cable (CalComp part number 11772-0102, 10 ft. serial
cable; CalComp part number 11772-0250, 25 foot serial cable).
This is not a proprietary cable. It is commercially available,
sometimes called a MODEM cable or EXTENSION cable. Note: A NULL-
MODEM cable is the incorrect cable.
2. The total cable length must not exceed 50 feet.
3. If the computer has a 9-pin connector for the COM port (i.e. COM1
or COM2), a commercially available 9 to 25 pin adapter is
acceptable to perform the conversion.
4. Connect the male end of the cable (e.g., pins sticking out) to
the female port on the back of the plotter (e.g., no pins
sticking out).
5. Connect the other end of the cable, the female end, to the
computer. On a PC compatible computer the cable connects to the
male serial COM port.
6. A cable that works with another manufacturer's plotter may not
work with this plotter. Other manufacturer's may be using
proprietary cables or null modem cables.
7. The pin-out is as follows:
a. 25 pin female to 25 pin male cable
Ground Pin 1 to Pin 1
TxD Pin 2 to Pin 2
RxD Pin 3 to Pin 3
RTS Pin 4 to Pin 4
CTS Pin 5 to Pin 5
DSR Pin 6 to Pin 6
SGND Pin 7 to Pin 7
DCD Pin 8 to Pin 8
DTR Pin 20 to Pin 20
b. 9 pin female to 25 pin male
TxD Pin 3 to Pin 2
RxD Pin 2 to Pin 3
RTS Pin 7 to Pin 4
CTS Pin 8 to Pin 5
DSR Pin 6 to Pin 6
SGND Pin 5 to Pin 7
DCD Pin 1 to Pin 8
B. If plotter has a parallel port (3024M or 3036M models only):
1. For parallel port connections, this plotter uses a standard
Centronics parallel cable (CalComp part #18735-0129 10 ft.
parallel cable).
2. The cable length maximum is 12 feet, unless it is a good quality
double shielded cable. The 25-foot CalComp twisted-pair, double-
shielded cables are the only longer Centronics parallel cables
supported by CalComp (CalComp part #717960-9 25 ft. parallel
cable).
3. Connect the male end of the cable into the LPT port on the back
of the PC computer. LPT ports on PCs are female ports (e.g., no
pins sticking out). Connect the other end of the cable into the
top port on the plotter.
C. If using a Macintosh computer:
1. The plotter uses an 8-pin mini-din Macintosh to 25-pin serial
cable (CalComp part number 16623-0029, 12 ft. cable).
2. Connect the cable from the Printer or Modem port (8 pin mini-din)
on the back of the Macintosh to the port on the back of the
plotter.
3. The pin-out is as follows:
Pinouts on Macintosh end of cable:
6 7 8
3 4 5
1 2
a. 8 pin mini-din to 25 pin male
HSKo Pin 1 to Pin 20
HSKi Pin 2 to Pin 5, 8
TxD- Pin 3 to Pin 2
GND Pin 4 to Pin 7
RxD- Pin 5 to Pin 3
RxD+ Pin 8 to Pin 7
b. 8 pin mini-din to 9 pin male
HSKo Pin 1 to Pin 4
HSKi Pin 2 to Pin 1, 8
TxD- Pin 3 to Pin 3
GND Pin 4 to Pin 5
RxD- Pin 5 to Pin 2
RxD+ Pin 8 to Pin 5
