A. Determine if the print head is defective or the nozzles are clogged.

      1. Using a good quality bond paper, perform the self-test on the
printer, as described in the User's Guide (page 3-11), or perform
            the following:

            a. First turn off the power on the printer.

            b. Press and hold the On Line and Print Mode buttons.

            c. Press the Power button while holding down on the On Line
and Print Mode buttons until the beeper sounds.

      2. Examine the output.

            a. The top line of the output contains an eight-by-eight
matrix. This is a nozzle check for all 64 nozzles on the
print head. Each horizontal segment represents a nozzle. If
a nozzle fires incorrectly, a blob of ink or no ink (white
space) will appear. To remedy, perform the following:

                  i. Clean the print head, as described in the User's
Guide (page 3-10), or perform the following:

i.1. While the printer is on line (on line indicator
is lit), press and hold the Print Mode button
while pressing the On line button.

i.2 The On line indicator will blink while this
                              process is being performed.

i.3. Wait until this process has completed.

i.4. Repeat this process five times in succession.
                              Repeat the self-test.

i.5. If the problem persists, the plot station,
where the print head normally parks itself, may
need to be manually cleaned. Use a q-tip with
isopropyl alcohol to clean both the rectangular
cap and the clear plastic wiper.

i.6 Repeat the print head cleaning process five
                              more times in succession.

i.7. If the problem still persists, replace the
                              print head.

i.8. If the problem persists after replacing the
print head, then the purging mechanism may be
faulty on the printer. If so, then the printer
                              requires service.

B. If the output from the self-test looks ok, then the problem is software
      related.

      1. If the problem happens with Windows but not in DOS, then examine
the video driver being used in Windows. Perform the following:

            a. Double-click on the Windows Setup icon. On some computers
this is located in the Program Group, and on others, it is
                  in the Accessories Group.

            b. The value for DISPLAY is significant. If the driver is
something other than the VGA driver, then install the VGA
driver. This may require the Windows diskettes. Perform the
                  following:

                  i. Click on the OPTIONS pulldown menu and select: CHANGE
                        SYSTEM SETTINGS.

ii. Click on the arrow in the DISPLAY selection and
scroll until the VGA driver is displayed.

iii. Click on: VGA. If Windows needs the driver, then it
                        will request the Windows diskettes.

iv. After loading the driver, Windows will prompt for
                        rebooting. After that, try outputting.

                  v. If problem is resolved, consult the video driver
                        manufacturer for a driver update.
