Plotter displays PLEASE CHECK CARRIAGE or SERVO INIT ERROR; Repeat dot misalign

Plotter displays: PLEASE CHECK CARRIAGE or SERVO INIT ERROR;
Repeated dot misalignment at specific y-axis (left-right) locations.
A. Check for obstructions which might not allow the carriage to move left-
to-right and grit drum roller to rotate.
B. Examine the pinch rollers.
1. Turn off power to plotter.
2. Unclamp the pinch rollers.
3. Remove media from plotter.
4. Verify that pinch rollers move freely. Clean, if necessary.
5. Turn on plotter power.
6. Reload media into plotter.
C. If the customer hears a grinding noise, a servo motor may be binding or
there is an incorrect power being supplied to the circuitry. It may
also be that the service (cleaning) station is mounted too high.
None of these are user serviceable.
D. The plotter determines accuracy in the y-axis direction by the use of
an encoder strip. As the carriage travels from left to right, the
plotter reads each marking to determine the correct positioning.
1. If the encoder strip becomes dirty or scratched, the plotter
will not be able to accurately plot. Verify that the encoder
strip is clean by performing the following steps:
a. Unplug the power cord from the plotter.
b. Remove the left end cover by removing one screw in the
front and two screws on the back of the left end cover.
c. Remove the right end cover as follows:
i. Remove one screw in the front and one on the back of
the right end cover.
ii. Slide the right end cover to the right far enough to
expose the screw holding the upper carriage cover on
the right side.
Note: The right end cover cannot be completely removed
because the control panel is electronically attached to
the plotter.
d. Remove the two screws on the upper carriage cover that are
now exposed by removing/moving the end covers.
e. Remove the upper cover.
f. With the upper carriage cover removed, the encoder strip is
visible. It is a clear plastic strip which appears to have a
slight gray tint and spans the entire length of the plotter.
It is attached to the topmost metal bracket, which also spans
the plotter.
g. The encoder strip must be completely clean and free of any
smudges. Because it is made of plastic, use soft materials
for cleaning, such as a cotton swab with alcohol or a
KEYKLEEN pad (shipped with plotter) to clean the encoder
strip.
Note: DO NOT use too much pressure, this may scratch the
surface and cause permanent damage. Gently rub both sides of
the encoder strip until it is clean.
h. If the servo motor wiring connector cables are not making a
good connection, then they can be simply reconnected. The
connections are all under the right end cover. Slide the
right end cover far enough to expose the circuit board.
Press on each connector to ensure that each connector is
tight.
i. Reattach the upper carriage cover and the two end covers.
Plug in the power cord to the plotter.
j. Verify that the problem has been remedied by running either
a PALETTE or BORDER PLOT test. Perform the following steps:
i. Load media.
ii. Press the MENU key until the plotter displays:
Menu-Use arrow keys to change
iii. Press the up arrow key until the plotter displays:
Internal Test
iv. Press the right arrow key until the plotter displays
either PALETTE or BORDER PLOT
v. Press the ON LINE button.
vi. Examine the output.
k. If the problem was not remedied, then the plotter requires
service.
